Talking to an employee at Shell Station -Emily Soh
Imagine walking into your neighbourhood petrol station, greeted not only by friendly staff but also by a uniformed cat "on duty." This charming trend has emerged at Shell petrol stations in Malaysia, where homeless cats have been given a second chance at life as "employees," donning small uniforms that make them appear as part of the team. Visitors and locals alike have fallen in love with these adorable furry companions, making every stop at the petrol station a memorable one.
These stray cats, once wandering the streets in search of food and shelter, now live comfortable and social lives, even becoming local celebrities. Dressed in tiny uniforms, they look like official members of the team. Their transformation from lonely wanderers to beloved stars tells a heartwarming story of kindness, creativity, and the joy of second chances.

Both customers and employees enjoy these furry friends, which have become a regular part of their stations' life.
The Origin Story
I spoke with the staff at Shell Putra Heights to learn how Minu became part of the Shell family. Their story is both touching and inspiring:
"We didn’t plan for this. Someone threw the cat here, and we felt bad about throwing it away again. So, the Shell workers decided to take care of it," one staff member Amirul shared.
What began as a simple act of kindness has now evolved into a beloved routine. Minu and her fellow feline "employees" have captured the hearts of both workers and customers, becoming a natural part of the station's daily life.
Giving Strays a Better Life
Giving stray cats a place to stay at petrol stations is not only a creative idea but also life-changing for the cats. Many of them faced malnutrition, illness, and constant danger while living on the streets. By offering them food, shelter, and a sense of community, Shell employees have made a significant difference in their lives. These cats, in turn, bring happiness to everyone they encounter, demonstrating how even the smallest acts of kindness can spread joy.
A Day in the Life of Minu
At Shell Putra Heights, Minu spends her days exploring the station, occasionally venturing over to the McDonald's next door for a snack. She entertains employees and gains the affection of customers.
"Like usual, they just run here and there and sometimes catch mice," joked a staff employee when asked what Minu's daily duties were.
But Minu’s most important job? being cute. Minu knows how to steal the show whether she's posing for a quick photo or taking a snooze in the sun.
Customers’ Reactions
Customers are always thrilled to see these little furballs in their tiny uniforms.
"The customers adore it. They very, very like her, lah. Everyone adores her!" said the worker.
Many customers take photos and videos of these furry "employees" and post them on social media, turning them into local celebrities and viral sensations.
What Malaysians Are Saying
The Shell cats have not only won people over in person but have also sparked a lot of discussion online. Malaysians’ reactions on social media range from humour to genuine affection.
Some have joked about the cats' "employment benefits," with comments like:
"How much do they get paid? I bet it’s in tuna and naps!"
"Part-time ke, meow?"
Others have made jokes about their roles at work:
“Bro is definitely the employee of the month.”
"Apa pulak pekerja, dia CEO la!"
One cheeky commenter joked about their training:
“Mesti first day kerja macam tak tahu nak buat apa je.”
These funny comments show that the Shell cats have become more than just local mascots—they’re cultural icons, sparking creativity and humour across Malaysia.
Why Petrol Station Cats Matter
The petrol station cats are more than just adorable creatures; they symbolise warmth and connection in a world that can sometimes feel distant and fast-paced. They highlight the importance of kindness—not only to animals but also to one another. By caring for these cats, Shell employees are promoting a sense of community, showing that even a petrol station can be a caring and joyful place.
The Bigger Picture
The presence of petrol station cats has also raised awareness about Malaysia's management of stray animals. Shell stations have demonstrated that it is possible to transform a difficult situation into something positive by providing the cats with both a home and a purpose. Their example serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness can have a significant impact.
What’s Next for Shell Cats?
As the popularity of these furry "employees" continues to grow, more petrol stations might consider adopting stray cats, creating a nationwide network of furry ambassadors. For now, cats like Minu, Jit Jit, and Misai will continue to brighten the day for anyone who visits their stations, proving that sometimes the best workers have paws.
Final Thoughts
Beyond being cute, the Shell cats represent generosity, creativity, and second chances. Their stories encourage us to approach abandoned animals with empathy and to recognize that even the most unexpected situations can bring joy.
So, the next time you stop at a Shell petrol station, keep an eye out—you may just encounter a new furry friend in uniform ready to brighten your day.
